It all begins when Matti opens the oven too soon and out jumps a cheeky little Gingerbread Bay. He leads Matti's mother and father, the dog and also the cat. And a whole colorful cast of characters on a rollicking chase via the village and in to the forest, staying just out of reach, daring them to catch him along the way.
But Matti's not with them. Only Matti knows he is safely inside. He's at home inside the borders making what turns out to become a gingerbread home into which the Gingerbread Baby runs. And readers will too once they look beneath the lift-the-flap gingerbread house at the end in the story, and there he is!
"I am the Gingerbread Baby, Fresh from the pan. Matti makes sure this naughty but appealing tiny one ends up suitable where he belongs. Eluding all efforts to catch him, the flat, becandied baby is chased around the village and into the countryside. Sure he's bratty, but he doesn't deserve the gruesome end the Gingerbread Boy typically comes to."That sassy cookie! When Matti opens the oven door just a small too soon, out pops a gingerbread baby instead inside the gingerbread boy he was expecting. He mercilessly taunts Matti's parents, a cat, the milk and cheese man, goats, villagers, a fox, and a lot a lot more. If you want me, Catch me in the event you can! In a less traumatic twist on the classic Gingerbread Boy story, this Gingerbread Baby even outfoxes the fox.
